Why is Testing necessary?
Emergency lighting is installed to protect life, and must be tested on a regular basis to ensure that it will work in the event of a mains failure. The law stipulates that emergency lighting must be tested for correct operation, to the recommended schedule, as per the British Standard. Central battery backup systems require inspection on a daily basis to ensure the power supply indicator is present, and the system is in a ready condition. No operational test is required.
Monthly Emergency Lighting Tests
All emergency lighting systems must be tested monthly. The requirement is a short functional test, in accordance with European and British Standards. The period of simulated failure should be sufficient for the system to be checked to ensure all are working and functioning correctly. Any faults should be recorded in the system log book, and corrective maintenance planned.
A full durational test of each fitting must be carried out by a ‘competent person’, this being a person with the necessary skills, training and knowledge to perform emergency lighting maintenance and servicing, with the ability to issue certification on completion.
PAT testing is an important part of your health and safety policy. The Health and
